Tank Top Vacuum Valve

VTY's sanitary tank top vacuum valve uses a gravity/spring-assisted rapid-response mechanism to prevent tank implosion during CIP cleaning, product discharge, or sudden cooling. Manufactured from 316L (1.4404) stainless steel with EPDM FDA-compliant seals, it operates reliably from -20°C to +135°C. Ideal for fermentation vessels, storage tanks, and mixing kettles in breweries, dairies, beverage plants, and pharmaceutical facilities. Full material traceability with EN 10204 3.1B certificate and 3A sanitary standards compliance.

The tank top vacuum valve is a small safety device that protects tanks from collapsing inward when a vacuum forms inside. This can happen during filling, emptying, or cooling after cleaning with hot water or caustic solutions in a CO2 environment. It is mainly used in breweries, dairies, and food and beverage plants to keep operations safe and reduce downtime.

The valve works with a preset counterweight. When the vacuum inside the tank drops below the set level, the valve opens automatically and allows outside air to enter, preventing damage. It can be installed on any closed tank.

How the Tank Top Vacuum Valve Works

The VTY tank top vacuum valve operates on a simple yet highly reliable counterweight-balanced mechanism – no complex electronics or external power sources required. Its core principle is instantaneous pressure equalization to prevent tank implosion.

1

Normal Operation (Sealed)

Under normal atmospheric or positive pressure, the counterweight holds the sealing disc firmly against the valve seat. The tank remains fully sealed to maintain product integrity and hygiene.

✅ Valve closed · No air exchange
2

Vacuum Detected

During draining, cooling, or CIP cycles, the internal pressure drops below the preset vacuum threshold (0.3–0.9 bar). The negative pressure overcomes the counterweight force.

⚠️ Pressure drop detected · Mechanism triggered
3

Instant Opening

The sealing disc lifts within milliseconds, creating an opening that allows ambient air to rush into the tank. Pressure equalizes instantly – before any structural deformation can occur.

🔓 Valve opens · Air flows in
4

Automatic Reset

Once the internal pressure returns to safe levels, the counterweight re-engages, pushing the sealing disc back into position. The valve resets automatically – no manual intervention needed.

🔒 Valve re-seals · Ready for next cycle

FAQ

Q1: What is the tank top vacuum valve used for?

An anti-vacuum valve is used to protect tanks and pipelines from collapsing or imploding by automatically letting air inside when a dangerous vacuum occurs.

Q2: Why 316L is better than 304 for the product-contact parts?

316L is superior for product-contact parts because its added molybdenum provides exceptional resistance to pitting from food acids, salts, and harsh CIP chemicals.

Q3: What is the difference between tank-top vacuum valve and tank-top pressure valve?

A tank-top vacuum valve only opens to let air in to prevent the tank from collapsing under vacuum, whereas a tank-top pressure valve only opens to vent excess gas out to prevent the tank from bursting under high pressure.

Q4: Where is the tank top vacuum valve installed?

A tank-top vacuum valve is installed at the highest point of a storage tank's top dome or lid to ensure unhindered airflow and prevent the vessel from collapsing during draining or cool-down cycles.

Q5: What is the difference between your VTY valve and standard Asian suppliers?

A: While most suppliers use 304 for non-contact parts, VTY uses enhanced 304 (1.4301) with a superior surface finish (Ra≤1.6μm) to prevent rust in humid environments. Additionally, we provide full material traceability with EN 10204 3.1B certificates, which is a mandatory requirement for most European dairy and pharmaceutical projects.

Q6: How often should the seal and spring be maintained?

A: For EPDM seals in daily CIP cycles (under 135°C), we recommend visual inspection every 3-6 months. The spring mechanism is designed for 100,000+ cycles, but heavy sugar or syrup residue can affect responsiveness – VTY offers custom PTFE seals for high-viscosity applications to reduce sticking risks.
